In energy, there is one big thing which is different, and that matters a lot:

Attribution tells you what worked under yesterday’s conditions. Budget allocation has to work under today’s conditions and the trends!

Energy budgets need to change fast

Imagine one tariff is performing very well in spring, great CPA, good volume and good conversion rate. That means you obviously keep the budget there.

Then summer arrives, seasonal demand changes, pricing changes. Maybe another product becomes more relevant by the business because of short vs. long term market conditions or buying behaviour. Or maybe a competitor gets aggressive, maybe a regional promotion changes the economics.

The old winner can still look good in the historic report while the best future opportunity has already moved somewhere else, this is why I do not like static channel shares in energy. Not because planning is useless, planning is important. But a plan should be allowed to react when the assumptions underneath it change.

There are three moments when I would actively re-question the allocation

Instead of using the same framework every week, I would pay special attention when one of these three things happens.

1. The tariff or price changes

A price change can affect conversion rates, demand, product attractiveness and customer mix at the same tim and the effect is not always immediate or equal across channels. Search may react quickly, Display and social may react differently. One region may be more price-sensitive than another. So when pricing changes, I would immediately ask:

Are our old CPA expectations still realistic?

Did one product become more or less attractive?

Does the marginal value of additional spend change?

That is not only a reporting questio, it should influence the budget decisions immediately.

2. Seasonality changes demand

Energy is one of those industries where seasonality is not just a nice line in a forecast, it can change the actual opportunity. But weather can also change the season. Demand can move because of temperature, season, energy prices, moving cycles, switching behavior or product relevance. If you manage several products, that can shift the portfolio too:

Electricty

Gas

Green energy products

Solar

EV-related offers

Heating-related products

The important point is not that “winter is different from summer”. Everybody knows that 😉 The important point is that your best marginal media opportunity can move with it.

That is where allocation should react.

Energy demand and media opportunity do not stay constant throughout the year. As demand, tariffs and product relevance change, the best place for the next euro can change too.

3. The regional market moves

Energy is also quite local in many cases, competition can differ by region. Brand strength can differ and sales performance can differ. As well as pricing & demand can differ a lot. So one national average can hide two very different markets, maybe one region looks expensive on CPA but has much better customer value. Maybe another region looks efficient but is already saturated. Maybe a competitor campaign changes demand locally.

I would therefore avoid assuming that one national budget rule is always enough. Sometimes the more useful question is:

Which product x region x channel combination has the best expected opportunity right now?

History matters. But the business events matter too.

A model learns from the past and that is useful, but the business often knows something about the future that the historic data does not.

For example:

Next week’s price change

New regional campaign

Regulatory event

Product launch

Seasonal peak

Weather forecast

I would not treat these as random noise outside of the optimization, if they are important to the business, they should become part of the decision context. This is also why I like event inputs in optimization systems. Not because an event automatically tells you what to do, but because it helps the model understand why performance changed and avoid learning the wrong lesson from it.

I would manage energy budgets in windows, not fixed shares

One thing I would do differently in energy is think less in annual channel percentages and more in decision windows.

For example:

What should the allocation look like for the next two weeks?

What changes if this tariff becomes the priority?

What happens if we get a demand spike?

What if total budget drops by 10%?

Which region can absorb another 20% without destroying efficiency?

This makes the planning much more practical. You still have the long-term strategy, obviously. But you stop pretending that the exact channel split decided in January must still be correct in October. For me, this is exactly where Scenario Simulation becomes useful: you can compare these business situations before moving the real money. (Yes, product mention. But in this case it really belongs here ;))

Enercity: the market changed, so the budget changed too

The enercity case is a very good example of this operating model. Enercity manages campaigns across Google Ads, Meta, DV360, Bing and TikTok. Nexoya dynamically reallocated budgets across these channels and adapted to seasonality and changing market conditions. The published result after four months was:

+23.3% sales

And importantly, the target CPA was maintained while sales increased. Another detail I like: enercity used Nexoya’s Events feature to include business events such as price changes. That is exactly the kind of context I described above. A price change is not just something the marketing team writes into a report afterwards. It can become an input that helps explain and improve the next allocation decision.

Read the enercity case study

What I would watch every week

For energy, I would not start every week with the same seven-question checklist. I would keep a small monitoring view and ask whether any of the assumptions changed.

I would watch:

Weather changes

Tariff and price changes (especially depending on your energy-buying strategy / short or long)

Demand by region

Product-level conversion quality

Saturation and headroom

Competitor or market events

CPA versus final business value

If nothing material changed, great. If something changed, that is the moment to re-run the whole allocation logic.

Monday morning: a tariff changes, energy prices jump 15%.Two weeks later: demand moves because the weather changes. Then a competitor launches a new offer in one region.
